ZhenWei Crispy Mooncakes Review

Firstly, I've to apologise for the poor image quality. I think my photography skills doesn't do the mooncakes any justice. So I'll be using mostly photos from ZhenWei's facebook page instead because I do not want to destroy your first impression with my bwang photography!

This is not the first time I've bought cripsy mooncakes from ZhenWei. I remember it was last years's (2019) Lantern Festival that I discovered this gem while shopping at the Mooncake Fair in Takashimaya Square.

That year, we actually wanted to get Peony Jade Pumpkin Yam mooncake but they sell like hotcakes and we didn't manage to get one. And then ZhenWei caught our attention. Not only are they cheaper, they also offer the option to buy just 2 pieces instead of 4.

ZhenWei's price list
(probably too late now that Mooncake festival is over)

And this year, they've come out a combo mix whereby they sell a box with 4 difference flavours (pumpkin yam, pure yam, single yolk yam and sesame yam). I've gotten a box of that from Shopee for $53.50 nett but it's as a gift for my grandma so I don't get to try all the flavours. For my family, I got a box of 2 x pumpkin yam and a box of 2 x pure yam since none of us have enough last year when we got only 2 pieces!

ZhenWei doesn't add any preservative into their crispy mooncakes, so they can only last 7 days if kept in the fridge and 3 days if not. Hence they provided a card with the manufacture date and instructions of how you can heat up the mooncakes after taken out from the fridge. For me, I choose to toast them in my mini toaster, but you can choose whichever way suits you best.

Taste wise, the fillings are really abundance and have a great smooth texture. We tried the pumpkin yam one and it's really quite tasty. The yam is as usual, very tasty and fragrance while not being overly sweet but the pumpkin doesn't have much taste. I really prefers their pure yam ones.

Ok, I told you, I take bad photos -_-

As for the skin, it really depends on how you heat it up. Heat it up right and what you get is outside crispy and inside tender!

However, there is one thing that you've to take note and that is ... the mooncakes are on the oily side as they're being fried instead of baked. Last year during the mooncake fair, they'll fry the mooncakes on the spot before boxing it up.

This is the kitchen towel that I use to wipe the tray that I baked ONE mooncake on. Yes, it's quite oily. And if you're like me, standing there to watch the mooncake bake, you'll see the oil oozing out.

But you know ... mooncakes are a once a year thing, so my family and I doesn't mind the oiliness ... it's not like we're very health conscious in the first place... Plus it's so tasty that it's on our "wanted" list since we only get 2 pieces last year and everyone doesn't seem to get enough of it!

Well, this is my review of ZhenWei's crispy mooncakes. They're absolutely delicious and the yam paste is just right! Not too sweet or bland! If you ask me, my preference would be their pure yam ones. My cousin says the sesame yam is tasty too.

However, if you're the health and weight conscious type, then you might not like that it's oily.

My little DIY "packaging" for pens

I've mentioned that my sister have bought a bunch of stationaries which she will give out to her students.

But then we're face with a problem ... we bought a box of 12 pens with refills and wanted to give them out individually.

You can imagine how "ugly" or cheapskate it would look if you just pass the person 1 pen and a refill... So I decided to try and DIY some "packaging" to solve the problem.

My sister says she wants a card that says "Good luck and All the best" so I decided to make something to bundle the pens and then stick it to the back of the cards.

So I printed some "strips" on sticker papers. I think printing on normal non-sticker paper would work too, you just have to scrotch tape them to bundle the pen and refill together.

I made 2 mistakes here - actually just one. I printed the wrong file. I've made another version whereby the text is white and the length is longer. This one is a little too short to stick to the back of the card, so I used it to just bundle the pens instead.

And what is left is just clipping the card to the clipper of the pen.

Both sis and I are happy with how it turned out.

This "packaging" took me just 20-30 minutes to make and it's cutting that takes up most of the time. If you have a paper cutter or die cutter, it'll be much faster.

2020 Children's Day Taobao Spree

Every year, I'm tasked to buy Children's Day gifts for my sister who works in a school environment. So it's the time of the year again and I love it that I can "legally and openly" have a Shopping Spree!!

Woohoo!!

Ok, fine, I've been buying stuffs online all these while, I don't really need a reason for that but you know, it's like now you've an official degree to do that!!

And obviously, I bought something for myself too!

Anyway, prior to getting the gifts, I actually did a quick " comparison" between Shopee SG and Taobao. Price wise Taobao is cheaper for most items, but then Shopee SG has a cheaper and "fixed" shipment fee ... which means, while Taobao selling price is cheaper, it might end up being more expensive or the same as on Shopee SG after adding in shipping fee (which is kinda unpredictable). Remember how a card reader turn from 70g to 300g?

Anyway, price is not the main factor I choose to buy from Taobao, but it's wide range of products, it definitely have much more choices than Shopee SG!

The Stationeries

Correction Tapes

These correction tapes were cheap and really cute! They comes in box of 5 or 6 (depending on the designs). They'll end up about SGD$1-1.20 each, including shipment.

Workmanship wise, it could be better as I did spot small gaps on a few of them but they doesn't affect the functionality. Overall, happy with these cute little correction tapes which made really good gifts.

The Pens

Sis have decided to get some "mature looking pens" for the older kids and "cuter" ones for the younger ones. There are a lot of choices on Taobao for pens, some of the metalic "fountain pen look-alike" are really cool but way over her budget. So we settled for this box of 12 pens by M&G. It also comes with 20 refills and a clear plastic case. These cost about SG$5.50-6.

They're presentable, good to hold and writes smoothly.

These are slightly more expensive than the above pens, they cost around SG$1 each with no refills or case. And I'm a little disappointed as some of them came with loose/dangling parts. Though they can be fixed but I'm kinda afraid they might come apart again.

Origami Papers

My sister have 2 students who were very inrterested in Origami. And my sister decided to get some origami papers for them. These cost SG$3 each. There are about 300-350 pieces in each of the packet. The papers are 6.3x6.3cm. I love how they have these plastic "pouch" which is more durable and can be reused when the paper runs out.

Paper quality wise, they're ok, not the best but not the worst. They're not the thickest but at least not overly thin. I estimate they're about 60-70gsm. The print wise is superb, love how colourful and sweet they are!

That is pretty much everything for the 2020 Children's Day gifts!

As for me, I've gotten 2 USB3.0 card readers one for a known brand, the other is an unknown brand, and also some sticker papers. But bleh, they're not wtaerproof ... the colours just runs when contact with water. -_-"

My Experience Selling on e-commerce site - Shopee SG Part 1

I've mentioned in a previous post (The gruelling process of getting my own customise designed microSD cards!) that I've tried selling some of my custom designed microSD cards on Shopee. (Shopee SG to be more specific)

I've been on Shopee for almost 2 weeks now, as of writing this. And ... well, made 1 sale. 2 if you count my trial sale.. (more about it later)

Well, I've to be honest. I started out with a mistake of ordering the MOQ of 20 pieces when I just needed 1. I got convinced that selling the excess off will be easy. And, I got ambitious, I started making labels with my own branding - "Pyu" without proper planning. This is an equation for "doom" (ok, just failure) but I realised it too late. And I only have myself to blame.

Anyway, now I'll share my experience selling on Shopee SG and how it failed.

What is Shopee?

Shopee is an e-commerce site which was founded in 2015 and are available currently in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, and Brazil.

Easy to Setup, No Entry Fee

Selling on Shopee is as easy as setting up an account and then listings the items you want to sell. There is no entry or setup fees but Shopee do charge a fee for transactions. So basically, it means that you don't have to pay anything till you sold something.

Transaction Fee

Taken from Shopee.sg FAQ:

Transaction Fee is 2% of the total payment of an order after application of any Shopee vouchers or Shopee Coins, including shipping fees. It will be rounded up to 2 decimal places.

There will also be 7% of GST charged towards the 2% value of your transaction fee.

Example:
Order value: $100
Transaction fee 2%: $100 x 2% = $2
GST Charges = $2 x 7% = $0.14

Be noted that Transaction Fee will still apply, on top of the Service Fee.

As for the service fee, it will only occurs if you decide to use Shopee's service for the sellers, like the Coins Cashback & Free-Shipping Special Programme.

Taken from Shopee.sg:

I've never used these services. I don't want to incur more costs on my end.
I did tried out Shopee Ads, but I won't cover that in this post.

Platform/Seller's Page

The platform is easy to use. If you've setup a shop already you just have to click the "My Shop" at the top of your profile page to navigate to your seller page. If you haven't setup a shop already then it'll probably show "Start Selling".

To list a product to sell, just go to "Add New Product" and you'll be brought to a page whereby you can upload product images, type in the descriptions and all the neccesary information to start selling. To view products you've listed, click on "My Products".

To add different variations of a product say "64GB" and "128GB" and you can choose to add images to showcase the different options.

There is an option for you to choose your preferred shipment method which you've setup. Everything is simple and straight forward, so you don't need to be some tech-savvy guru to list your items and start selling.

Setting Up Shipment methods/Shipment Fees

Setting up shipment methods is by clicking "My Shipping" on the main page of the seller's page.

You'll be brought to this page with a few shipping options to select from. And that is probably the downside of it, very little options to choose from.

Note that other than Singpost Normal Mail, all other shipping methods will cost, even if you opted for buyer to pay for shipment.

Fulfiling an order

Basically, after a buyer paid for the item, you'll be notified by Shopee and provided the address and all the relevant details needed to ship the item.

The order will appear under My Shipment >>> "To Ship" and you there you'll see an option that says "ship item" or similar. (Sorry, I really couldn't recall. I should have screenshot it)

After which, you'll be required to provide evidence that you really did ship the item. I don't know what they're asking for, but I snapped a photo of the "package" with the address of the buyer in front of the postbox.

That's it. You just have to wait for the buyer to receive and accept the item. Only after the buyer click "Receive order" on his end, will the money be release to you.

If there is any dispute, Shopee will hold on to the money till it's settled.

Business Insights

Shopee includes a very basic "analytics" feature whereby you can view number of Visitors to your item page, Page views, Sales ...etc. Do not expect it to be like Google Analytics, it's not even close, especeially on the mobile app. The website version have slightly more details and information but still not clear enough to deduce who is your audience, keywords and such.

Yeah I know my statsitics is really terrible.

And I'll tell you why in a minute.

Competitions, Traffic and Sales

I guess it's no secret that competition is high on almost every category in Shopee. You're not only competing with local sellers but also sellers from China and some other Southeast Asia countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.

With a "market" so saturated, you can only compete with Price and Reviews.

But when I start selling on Shopee, some of the big players selling memory cards already have over thousands of sales and reviews. I could only try to compete in price, which sadly, I couldn't go too low.

To make things worst, I'm listed very low in the search results and buried deep under the bigger players' listings. I did a search for "microSD 128GB", only to find my listing at page 14. I even ranked lower than a listing for thumbdrives and another for Type-C OTG adaptor cable! And to be honest, most consumers will not go that far down the search results. I've like 0 visitors and views for days.

Not to mention that I can't participate in Flash Sales and I wasn't invited to join any of the Shopee campaigns (like the 9.9 Sales). I didn't meet their requirements and is not the "Preferred Seller".

Shopee keep track of their sellers with Penalty Points. There are numerous ways you can "earn" these points, like your Non-fulfillment Rate (orders cancelled by you) is too high, your Late Shipment Rate is high... blah. You need to have quite a nice "Report card" to be considered a "Preferred Seller" and to be able to create Flash Sales.

The only "free weapons" are to create vouchers for products and give discounts for my items and a "boost" feature which is available every 4 hours, but it doesn't really do much to move my listing up.

Most of the advertising/promoting options in Shopee will either incur cost (buying Advertisements, paying for shipment...etc), are not suitable for shops with less than X number of products or simply won't work without your listing getting seen in the first place!

So in the end, it's either you pay to get more presense on the site or you've really good promotion campaigns outside of Shopee that drives your sales.

Real Returns

My returns from Shopee are not high. Not surprising, right?
In actual fact, prior to starting this listing, I did a trial listing and made a "loss".

In my trial listing, I've asked a friend to buy a card from me, just to try out how the whole thing works. So I told her to buy like how she would usually on Shopee, which is how most users will buy on Shopee. They'll spam coins and vouchers to offset their shopping. And coins are not that difficult to earn.

So yeah, my friend spammed her coins on the purchase and after the 2% Transaction fee + 7% GST, ta-dah, I only gotten ~68-69% of the selling price!

According to Shopee, a buyer can use coins to offset shopping for up to 30% of the selling price. And up to 1000 coins per day. And I can tell you that 30% can really dimish a seller's profit!

Let me give you an example:

To combat this problem, sellers would need to set their selling price higher to cover for it. Now, the question is, will their price still be competitive?

And nope, there is no way to opted out of this "coin offset system" nor set a lower percentage on coin usage.

Conclusion

Overall, Shopee is user friendly in terms that its easy to pick up and start selling. However, I won't consider it a "small player friendly" site to sell on.

Firstly, competition is high. You'll need to be really creative in your advertising or be prepared to spend on Shopee advertising just to have some "presense" on the listing.

Also, the coin system can really "break" any small player who usually did not have the most competitive price. They'll almost definitely suffer a loss in cases where the buyer use the maximum number of coins allowed during the purchase.

Anyway, while I was writing this, I was invited to join their 10% Cashback "event" and I submitted my application ... waiting for news now...

Earphone Rant: Revonext QT5 Upgraded but not better

Warning: This will not be a earphone review, but a rant! LOL

I've actually bought a pair of Revonext QT5 earphone in late March this year. I got the copper-pink one with microphone. They're not very expensive, you cna get them around SG$30, which is quite a deal for the quality.

QT5 sounds good on almost all genre I listen to and has this really energetic bass with comfortable and crisp tremble. And the best of all, it's microphone is pretty remarkable.

How do I know?

Well, during the Circuit Breaker, mum has kidnapped the pair and used it as her microphone to sing on her karaoke app. She aquired quite a huge following and as she claims, "have fans and people who wants to duet with her". It is also the earphone she use for her sing lessons via Zoom.

Anyway, she adores the QT5 microphone so much, I can never get it back.

BUT THEN ...

Yeah, tragic strikes. Well, due to her rough usage - tagging in bag, dipped once into the soup of her prawn mee, swing and hit the wall twice, fell for table height X times... etc The pair finally decide it's time to go... One of the drivers in the right side came loose and was "bouncing" around in the casing... so sometimes the audio would get a little too "dynamic" ... and then weeks later the cable connecting to the microphone snapped. Uh-oh, there goes her microphone!

So, I was tasked to buy her a replacement. Well, I gave her a spare replacement cable with microphone to use for the time being. She didn't really like the microphone but think it's "OK".

I went back to the same store and ordered a pair in Gun metal, also with microphone (obviously!) Waited for about a week and then got it in my hands.

Honestly, I still prefers the copper-pink one, it seems to have more personality, but gun metal is quite cool too. The metal casing is superb quality and feels really great.

When I opened the box, OH Wow! Not only a microphone but also a 3 button remote! They also upgraded their connector ... The connector on the previous one doesn't have their branding on it and seems a little less protected than this upgraded one!

I was excited and pleasantly surprised by the upgrade ... A cable with 3 button remote has been something I've been planning to get as that would make it easier for me to adjust the volume/skip tracks during deliveries. And the best thing is, this remote works with IOS!!

But erm... it's mum's so yeah, I got her to test it out by singing a song on the karaoke app. Uh-oh ... bad news!! The microphone is ...bleh!!

Like ... really disappointing!! There is this constant statics (or whatever you call it) sound when you sing... and it gets recorded... so for every recording there is this annoying "eeeekk...eeeeeeeeeeee.... zzzzzzz" sound in the background. Also it tend to get soft or muted randomly, so one moment we're singing loud enough at your current level, the next it may become almost inaudible ... it's a nightmare to use for singing!

I went and search online ... and found that most of the reviewers have gotten theirs with a cable like my previous pair.

Source: audiobudget.com

So I asked the seller and he told me that I've gotten the version with an upgraded cable ... He asked me to take a look at the box... indeed there is a stick which says "upgraded cable".

Erm... but I don't really feel there is any upgrade in terms of sound or microphone quality ... the upgrade is just the esthetics and well a 3 button remote controller.

And now... problem still not solved, instead I've more questions. Should I try again and get another pair with non-upgraded cable or should I just try out other brands?

But erm ... What brands comes with good microphones?
