Used Simba (previously known as TPG) 50GB SIM only plan for GrabFood, is it good?

I know I've written about TPG 50GB SIM only plan before (read it here), and I mentioned that I didn't really enjoy its unstable connectivity. But this time round, due to some unforeseen event, I signed up for their 50GB plan again.

Well, it's 100GB for $10/month for the FIRST month only and subsequent month will be back to 50GB per month for the same price.

50GB is more than adequate for GrabFood delivery, at least for my case. I only used up less than 600MB/day for 6-7 orders with some YouTubes while waiting for orders.

I've been using this plan for GrabFood over the past few days. And I've summed up what I feel about the TPG this time round.

"Service Shop" and Customer Service

I went down to their store in Orchard Central to sign up for the plan. I was pretty surprised by the service I received. The CSO at the counter was very friendly, patience and took initiative to help me get my phone setup.

Apparently, TPG only support VoLTE calls and you need to set it up before it could be use. If you don't, you can't make normal phone calls (Whatsapp call will still work though).

I'm using my POCO X3 Pro instead of my iPhone this time round and there is a whole string of code needed to be entered to activate VoLTE, which the staff offered to help me do it without me requesting. There are also a few times we couldn't hear each other speak because of the facial mask and glass divider and she was patience with me.

I must say, I'm pretty pleased with the young lady who served me.

Affordable Price

I actually did some research (not an in-depth one though) and I believe that the TPG offers the cheapest data plan in town!

I mean this TPG SIM only plan is just $10/month for 50GB of 4G data, 1GB international roaming Data, 30 SMS and 300 minutes of talk time.

You probably couldn't find any plan cheaper than this for the same amount of 4G data! And they also have a senior plan that provides 20GB of 4G data, 1GB international roaming Data, 30 SMS and 300 minutes of talk time for just $5/month! (you need to be a senior to sing up though)

Connectivity and GPS Navigation

Disclaimer: I only tried out in the location where I deliver GrabFood, so I can't really say for other areas.

To be honest, connectivity hasn't been the best but is decent.

I do face some lag when I was underground while I was walking the underpass in a TEL MRT station. So on the map, I may seems to have "teleported" few meters down the road! I hope Grab doesn't think I'm faking my location though.

While delivering GrabFood, I do notice a few times when the indicator on the map navigation (both in GrabFood in App map and Google Map) will tend to "fidget" or jump around a little. While this could  be a phone's problem, I can't rule out if it's the 4G being unstable.

Anyways, if you're on a bicycle (which I did for a few trips), you might face some problem, as the "jump" could occasionally reroute the route. As for me, since I'm mainly on foot, these little "jumps" doesn't affect me much.

And I must say, I haven't have much problem delivering with this TPG plan. There are little disruptions in connection and I do find that it worked much better than previously. At least I don't have problem with connectivity in lifts nor do I suddenly received messages like "Welcome back to Singapore!" like I did the other time round.

Problem with OTP

This problem have existed right from the start when TPG first entered Singapore. That some users reported they couldn't receive OTP from certain apps on their TPG number.

I didn't try that out the previous time round but this time round I did. I remember having to setup a few apps on my phone and I can receive most of the OTPs. However, when I was trying to setup Telegram, I couldn't receive the OTP. I've tried it thrice, and all 3 times I didn't receive OTP.

I didn't try to setup my DigiBank on this phone so I didn't get to try if OTPs from banks could be received.

TPG SG App

TPG has make an app to make it easier for users to check their data usage and bills. If you're not paying by credit card and have to manually top up cash for your plan, you can do it via the app too.

However, the App requires you to enter an OTP every single time you log into the app and these OTP (in fact all OTPs) will use up your SMS count. I think it's a rather silly way to exhaust the SMS limit.

Billing Issues and Flexibility

I've mentioned in my previous post that TPG have issue with their billings (like double charging) and they're extremely slow in terminating lines.

However, they seems to have that problem fixed and the lady at the counter told me that cancellation have to be done 7 days prior to the next billing. Anything later will see your plan continuing for another month.

While TPG have fixed their billing issues, they are rather inflexible in the porting of their lines, even if it's within their own company.

Well, when I was there, there is this man whose line was cut due to late payment and he wishes to reconnect his line but TPG can't do it for him. It seems like they just cancel his line and he have to sign up a new line and he couldn't use back his old mobile number.

There are also complains online that TPG doesn't allow users to port from one plan to another. So a user wishes to port his current line to TPG's business plan since he has been using it for his business calls anyways. But TPG couldn't do that and asked him to sign up for the Business plan and he will get a new number with that new sign up. That obviously defeats the purpose as he'll then have to change the contacts for his business.

I feel TPG could work on allowing users to switch from plan to plan or upgrade without having to re-signup or get a new number.

Overall, I must say I'm pretty happy with TPG SIM only plan this time round. I can see that they've improved their connectivity and customer service.

It's much more stable now and I feel it's comparable with my StarHub 3G and 4G line. Yes, of course comparing 3G to 4G is pretty unfair, but Starhub has been around for ages... so I do expect a little more from them...

For $10/month with 50GB data is quite a steal! Although 30 SMS and 300 minutes Talk Time may not be enough for some.

Why I hate GrabFood Stacked and Group Orders

Well, it's December again and Grab have their annual Christmas Mumbo Jumbo again - well, it's a good thing because there'll be extra benefits for the delivery riders/drivers.

Well, they're their usual Team Mission but this year round, you have to opt-in. Which means, you can choose not to participate and face "team pressure". However, if you've a group of chiong-stars kakis (friends), you can form a group of 6 and chiong for the Team mission.

There are T&C though, like you can't have more than 2 Sapphire level members in your team and if you suay suay (unlucky) have inactive members in your team, also too bad, you cannot change team.

Oh I forgot to mention that if you cannot find kakis to form a team, you can fill up a form and Grab will form a team for you. Erm, I've no kakis so I went for the 2nd option, thinking I probably will end up not having a team, but erm... don't know is heng or suay, I got into a team. Grab opened a Telegram chat for us but ... no one is speaking inside.

I got a feeling they all think like me, just try their luck. LOL

Anyway, I think I got off topic. And I haven't even mention the lucky draws and some other Christmas bonanza which all riders/drivers have a chance to win prizes and gifts, just by doing at least 1 trip between 20th December to 2nd January.

Anyway, I really need to get back to topic. As I was in a team, I decided that I should at least try to contribute something, even if it's just a little.

So I tried to do more than usual, although to be honest, all of these walking have taken a toll on my joints. Sometimes, things that doesn't kill you, will just torture you for eternity. Plus, there's that damn thing called "age"... haiz...

As usual, Grab will have their "PowerUp Zones" and "Peak Hours" whereby you'll get more gems. I usually heck-care about them because, they NEVER apply to the area I deliver in. But this time round, I tried to fit my schedule around the peak hours, just to pick up a few more gems for the Team mission.

However, the peak hours are kinda short in the sense, they're about 3-4 hours during the brunch period, and 6 hours during the dinner period.

I tried to do as many during the brunch hours so I can enjoy dinner at home and then catch some TV time. However, Grab have other plans.

What they did? Stacked and grouped orders.

What happened was, on the first day of the Team Mission (20th), I've gotten a stacked order and I could only see the first order. (which is already quite far for someone on foot) I decided that I shouldn't waste my Acceptance rate (you should always try to keep it above 90%). I accepted it, only to realise that the 2nd of the stack order is WAY further than the first!

Worst is that the 1st order is already heavy (3 large meals with drinks) and I've to collect the 2nd order as well.

No choice, cannot exhaust my cancellation rate on the first day, so I walked the distance which Google Map estimated to be 1.3km and will take 15-17 mins. But you know, it'll never be 17 mins with all that weight. So ended up reaching there in 30+mins and a little shy of 1 hour mark for the 2nd order.

Updated on 31 Dec 2021: A worst grouped order happened 2 days later, the 2 orders total up to 4.3km! Once again, one order that is already a little far for walker (1.8km) and another order that is over 2.5km! This time round, it took me 1.5 hours to get to the 2nd custom's house. Food is definitely cold already!

I swear, I already tried my very best, so much so that I got cramp at the end of it. The route Grab had planned was just ... erm, how fast do you expect your walkers to walk? I mean, back in my school days, I did 12+ mins for my 2.4 leh... and that's running. Now I carry food and walk leh!

So obviously, I didn't do too many jobs during the 4 hours brunch slot. Plus, stacked and grouped orders always pay lesser for similar distance, because Grab doesn't factor in the detour you've to take.

This happened for every single day ever since the start of this Christmas Bonanza, with the 2nd order out of the way from the 1st and I can only reached in around 45 minutes to 1 hour even after trying my best. I do feel a little bad for the customer but I still have to be a little selfish or I'll have to sacrifice my bonus. In order to receive the bonus, you can't have acceptance rate lower than 90% and cancellation rate have to be 10% or lower. That's basically just 3 missed jobs and 3 cancellations.

I foresee myself getting slower as days pass due to accumulated fatigue. (I won't become a robot just because I deliver food) I'm considering to give up chasing the bonus or just doing that on alternative weeks. For my area, which is on the hill, riding bicycle kills muscles too fast!

Many people have asked "GrabFood can earn a living?" I think I've addressed that in some of my previous posts but I'll say it again ... Yes and No.

I can't say for other modes of delivery but as a walker, it'll be possible to earn 1K/month IF you're working for long hours (at least both the Peak hours) in Downtown area, 7 days a week and hitting at least the Tier 1 bonus targets for both weekends and weekdays. Basically, it'll be no different from a "full-time 8 hour job" and it's probably not very sustainable (depending on your fitness)

I tried that for 2 months, not in the Downtown area though. I worked around 8 hours every single day, hitting all the bonus targets but I didn't make it to 1K still.

Extra Long Delivery Times for Taobao Items!! Plus "new" consolidation rules!

Well, I just have to say that my Double 11 Taobao shopping haul haven't arrived yet.

LOL, I've chosen Sea Freight and expected that it would take at least 3 weeks but it's like a month now and according to the tracking information, it has just arrived in the Singapore port at 15:00 on 10 December.

And there is no further actions till today. And this is just one of the package.

Well, Taobao seems to have a new rule for consolidation shipments. While, I'm not such about Air Freight, for Sea Freight, you can only consolidate up to a maximum of 30 packages per shipment.

Which means if you've more than 30 packages, you'll have to separate them into 2 shipments, which also means 2 (base) shipment fees!

However, do not confuse "Packages" with "Items". So let's say you bought 32 erasers from a single seller and she packs them into 1 package, it's counted as 1 package. However, I'm not sure if the seller, for some weird reasons, decides to pack them into multiple packages, will they count as a single package or not.

But, most sellers will try to pack them as one package, unless it's impossible to.

Anyway, back to the topic.

I've over 30 packages, so naturally, I've 2 shipments.

One, which was consolidated around 15 November, was the one mentioned above, and still sitting at the Singapore port.

The other, was consolidated around 20 November, and guess what...

It haven't left China port. Yes, for around 3 weeks, it's sitting at the port, probably playing Nintendo Switch while collecting dust.

Well, I know waiting time will be extra long during the Year end "Doubles" sales (11.11 and 12.12), but I really didn't expect it to be this looong.

Erm, I've ordered something again from Taobao on 12.12 ... let's hope it'll arrive before Chinese New Year.

Anyways, just a heads up for those who wanted to buy from Taobao during this period, waiting time can be CRAZY loooong!!

A shorted USB input can cause more problem ...

I had a bad scare just a few days ago!

I was installing my unsuccessfully returned Transcend SSD into my PC when something horrifying happened!

My PC went dead! It won't turn on at all!
And worst, it was leaking electricity! I just kept getting small jolts of shocks when I touched any USB ports, any exposed metal or even the screws on my casing!

I thought it must be the problem with my power supply unit (PSU)! So I removed it and did a paperclip test by inserting the 2 ends of a paperclip into 2 different pins to try and short it. (You can see the tutorial here) And somehow, it still didn't run! So the PSU is probably dead.

I asked a friend of mine and he said that I probably fried my motherboard! Which made my heart sink! If a motherboard is fried, it could also affected everything else that is connected to it - like the GPU, ram and even the SSD/HDD! I was pretty devastated, I just spent more than a thousand on my PC and it's dead now!!!

However, my friend told me not to despair yet and do further testing first. So I removed my current PSU and then run an old PSU on it (but it's missing the GPU PCIe cable connector and it has only a 4 pin connector instead of 2x4 pin which my motherboard needs) so I couldn't test the GPU and not sure if enough power is supply to my CPU.

Turned out that my motherboard could turn on but not so sure about my CPU since my PC could only output video through the GPU.

Well, at least my motherboard is pretty safe... I contacted Cooler Master (since my PSU is still under warranty) and they asked me to run through a few test ...

I was pretty reluctant to try but I still decided to follow their instructions to clear the CMOS - removing the battery and wait for 1-5 minutes.

Somehow, when I was opening the case again, I realised that there is one USB connection that I didn't remove. Probably missed it since it wasn't in the way; it was long enough for me to open the case easily and do all the testing.

So I removed it... and then did the CMOS clearing... I connected everything back and... surprisingly, everything started to work!

Erm... so what is exactly the problem?

To be honest, I don't know the whole theory behind it. I just know that the particular USB port that I didn't plug out is having power issue - when I tried to plug it in, there is a small spark!

So it was the one who is causing the electricity leak! Well, it's powered by an external power source via a MicroUSB cable, and that cable happened to be faulty! So it was causing the "short".

I'm not sure how a small "faulty" USB connection could actually affect the WHOLE computer, preventing it from even powering up! But at the same time, I'm pretty glad that the protection on my PC is good enough to prevent further damage!

Replacing a MicroUSB cable is definitely cheaper than having to replace any of the PC parts!!

Phew, what a relief!!

Shopee Returning Policy: 15 days return is not guarentee return (refund)!

Firstly, I want to make it clear that this unhappy experience was partially my fault. I didn't try to understand the return policies well enough hence I've to suffer the consequences.

I've previously reviewed Dragon Touch 4K action camera and I actually returned it via Shopee Mall 15 days return. I stated that the camera is not working as expected (too shaky when use on my bicycle)

However, I was blocked by the seller after all sorts of testing and time wasting (MIA) by seller. I was pretty puzzled, it was an "official store" and I didn't expect them to just block me like that. I was thinking to get another Action camera from their store ...

Anyways, this time round, I've gotten an SSD to try speed up video rendering and gaming experience on my PC. The SSD I was using back then was also 3/4 full, so I thought an upgrade would be needed.

I ordered from Transcend Official store, also comes with 15 days return. Delivery was fast, I got it within 4 days.

I did the SSD cloning and then got it booted up. However, I didn't notice any noticeable increase in speed, instead, there are some short stutters here and there - usually when you open a program or folder.

It's a very short ~1 seconds freeze, but it's annoying especially when you're trying to do video editing!

So  I decided to return it and get another one.

From my previous experience, I decided not to state a reason (Ok, I admit, I was lazy to go through all the video taking process to show the random stutters and I've already placed my Old SSD back into the PC), so I went with "Change of Mind".

Another reason is, I do not wish to be blocked by Transcend Official Store.

In the end, it proved to be a big, stupid mistake! I should write my experience honestly - the short stutters that affect my usage. (And also not be lazy and wait for the error to appear)

Because, according to Shopee return policy, not every seller agree on reasons like "change of mind"!

I didn't read the policy beforehand because I thought since it's electronics and I returned it in perfect condition, it would be like Taobao 7 days "no question" return policy or Amazon's return policy, (just that I might not get a full refund).

However, the 15 days return policy is NOT "No question" return policy but subjected to seller's approval, even if it's not sensitive or perishable items.

So after waiting about a week for the approval, I got a rejection instead!

Well, I can't complain, it's my fault that I didn't find out more about the return policy beforehand and my laziness got me ... ... it's all karma ...

So well, here is a reminder:

1) DO NOT use the option "Change of Mind" unless you've an agreement with the seller. (And pls printscreen it, just in case!)

2) Shopee Mall 15 days return policy is not "No question" return! And definitely not like Amazon's return policy whereby you get refunded for reasons like “I did not like the product”! (By the way, too many returns can get your Amazon account banned!)

3) If you think something might be a problem, capture it first because you're not likely going to be testing back and forth if it's not at your convenience.

Anyways, since returning (mailed out the SSD for return), I've already gotten a 1TB Samsung QVO 870 SSD to replace my old SSD. It's running so far so good and video editing and rendering becomes really smooth!

But then, the Transcend SSD is now left to rot in my drawer ... maybe I'll use it as a secondary drive... but if it still stutters, it might just make my system slow too ...

Damn!

Oh Wow! Maybe Japan should mix and match their doubles players around more!!

Just watched 2 sensational Uber Cup semifinals badminton matches yesterday and I'm still feeling the excitement now!!

It's played between Japan (JPN) and Korea (KOR), and both are Women's Doubles (WD) matches! I didn't know how women's doubles matches can get so exciting but it just did!

Well, the Japanese team are facing problems with injuries. All of their regular pairings have injuries. Yuki Fukushima's regular partner, Sayaka Hirota has serious injuries to her knee (ACL), Mayu Matsumoto and Nami Matsuyama's partners Wakana Nagahara and Chiharu Shida are also injured, while Misaki Matsutomo's partner, Ayaka Takahashi have retired.

So, I've to really compliment the Japanese head coach Park Joo-bong and the coach in charge of WD, Kei Nakashima, for really making the best pairings!

The first match is between Japanese pairing of Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto and Korean pairing Shin Seung-chan and Lee So-hee.

Scratch pairings (Fukushima and Matsumoto) will always have problem with confusions because they are not familiar enough with each other's movements and coverage. Usually they'll go for the same shuttle or not at all for the shots placed in between them.

Fukushima and Matsumoto does face the same problems too. They on a few occasions went for the same ball and also did got move out of positions by the Koreans in their regular pairings.

The Japanese side also have problem with Matsumoto's inconsistency. She tend to switch on and off during matches. On her good days, she is aggressive, sharp and venomous; on her bad days, she is Santa Clause and just giving away points and putting easy shots into the net.

Game 1, unfortunately, we've a Matsumoto on bad days, so Fukushima stepped up, did a lot of coverings and played a few clever winners. But those are not enough to cover Matsumoto's mistakes and the game went to the Koreans, 21-19.

Game 2 was when Matsumoto start to switch on. She is sharper and more consistence. She played a few brilliance winners and her strong net play and smashes started to work wonders. She gained confidence and stepped up her defense.

Fukushima, on the other hand starts to do more of just covering the court for her partner when she is in front doing all the attacks. And with her quick footwork, she did managed to save a few clear winners.

Japanese took the 2nd game, 21-16.

Game 3 is Matsumoto on her peak (IMO) though some silly mistakes did creeped in. However, it's also clear that Matsumoto gained her confidence back, she is taking more risky shots and going for the lines. She also managed to play winners with her disguised drop shots.

Game 3 is just Matsumoto's stage and Fukushima, doing her part to cover for her. The Koreans did their best too, with their defenses and aggressive attacks, forcing errors from Matsumoto. But oh well, the game still goes to the Japanese.

For the next game between Japanese Misaki Matsutomo and Nami Matsuyama and Olympic bronze medallists Korean Kong Hee-yong and Kim So-yeong.

This match is exciting. A match between agility and intelligence versus power. It's not that the Koreans aren't intelligent players, it's just that the Japanese are more "crafty" and creative.

The Japanese doesn't have a heavy hitter as compared to Kong Hee-yong who produced excellent smashes, so they made it up with their agility and creativity.

Instead of killing with smashes, they mainly win with clever placements, cross-court and dropshots, after moving the opponent out of position.

Seriously, the 2 Matsu(s) worked so well together, I almost forgot that they're a scratch pairing! The Koreans have great power and defenses the Japanese still managed to crack them.

Well, Japanese scratch pair surprises me. Matsuyama seems to do better with Matsutomo than her regular partner, Chiharu, while I think Fukushima should stay with Hirota who is more consistant.

Touch Mark: A cheaper alternative to Copic marker

I've taken an interest in art markers recently. I've owned Copic markers but didn't really use them - to be honest, I didn't have the confident to use them. I still am, but I still went and got myself some art markers.

Obviously, I'm not going to get Copic again. It's not that they're bad but they're expensive. I really don't want to waste the money and not use them (in case I still couldn't find the confident).

So, a cheaper alternative is the way to go.

And I found one - Touch Mark markers, which cost about 1/10 of the price of Copic markers.

They have a total of 168 colours in this oil based series (the have 2 other series and another water-based series). They sell in different colour combinations for different purposes, e.g: 40 colours "Manga" set, "Student" set, "Fashion Design" set...etc.

I picked this 40 colours "All purposes" set which cost around SG$13-14 (including shipment).

The markers came with 2 tips - 1mm "round" tip and 6mm "Chisel" tip, so it works well even with small areas.

Like Copic markers, the markers allowed "layering" to create shadows/a slightly darker shade. It also allow for colouring blending and gradients.

However, I must say that I didn't really master the colour blending. Also a thing to note is that, you can't use these markers with "normal" sketchbooks as they'll most likely "seep" to the next page! You probably need to get marker pads or watercolour papers.

Using wise, I feel they're smooth and easy to use, but I still am a long way to mastering them. Still, I'm pretty happy with these markers!

Baby Mynah flew away ...

Yeah, we're prepared for this day. We knew he would leave us one day, when he is ready. What we didn't expect is that it'll be this fast and in the most unfortunate way.

He didn't leave because he wanted to, but because he was startled.

Baby mynah have always been timid and recently, we've crows starting family in the trees nearby our house. They were eyeing on baby mynah. At least we believed so as they kept trying to get closer to our window.

So what we do is to clap and wave our hands to send a message across - not this bird, not this house.

This morning, my dad let baby mynah out of his cage for his usual morning play + feeding time routine. The crows got closer and were calling at him, so my dad clapped loudly.

Baby mynah was startled and as he was very close to the window, he flew out. We tried to call him, whistle, sing the song we always sing to him... but he never came back.

I know this day would come but I wished he was better prepared. He is still struggling to eat solid food and would only eat by himself if the food is really soft (like meshed potato state). But all we can do is wait, maybe he'll know his way home.

Taobao Vs Shopee: When to use which?

Well, before we get into the topic, let's a few things clear.

1) I'm a regular online shopper (who might just happen to shop a little more than usual shoppers LOL), so these information are largely personal opinions and experiences.

2) These are NOT official information and should be use as reference only.

So with these 2 things made clear, let's get to the 3rd and fourth one:

3) I'll not be responsible if anything unpleasant happen if you decided to make an important purchase decisions because of this post!

4) This context is true for Singapore only! I can't say for other countries!

Ok, now that we're clear, let's get started.

I actually didn't want to make a comparison between these 2. As I'm probably going to be biased. LOL. I'm a huge Shopee fan the moment I discovered it! I like how cheap and convenient it is!

Anyway, I'm going to split this comparison into 5 main parts - Selections, Price (before and after shipment), Time (speed of delivery),  customer service/buyer protection and discounts.

Selections

Well, well, there is nothing to compare here. Taobao have a much larger selection. The prices are also more competitive which brings us to the next point.

Price

Comparing prices between these 2 shopping sites is rather complicated. It's almost like comparing Apples and Oranges. Well, you see, Shopee has a more expensive price tag but much cheaper (or even free) shipping fee. While Taobao has a much more lower price tag but higher shipment fee (depending on the options you choose)

Let's take this as an example:

18 pieces of 1.5mm thick A3 size grey cardboard will cost SG$55.89 on Shopee, shipping fee is $0.

It'll cost SG$4.60 on Taobao. Cheap huh?

But then let's calculate the shipping fee, shall we?

The item weights 2.29kg and depending on shipping options, the fee will varies. I chose to ship by Sea via Taobao Global Consolidation and Shipping(集运) for these and the shipment fee is about SG$9 (estimated) including the 7% GST tax.

The sea consolidation shipping option is in most cases the cheapest way to ship from Taobao, but the downside is that it'll take a long time.

Taobao promises 17 working days for the parcel to be delivered, but it can take up to a month, especially during festive/sales periods.

If you consider the other options, Air consolidation shipping will cost SG$16.50, Direct shipping via Sea would cost SG$10.70 (excluding GST tax) and Direct shipping via Air will cost SG$17.10 (all shipping fees are estimated).

*Only Sea shipments incurs GST tax, Air shipment doesn't.

I actually bought these cardboards from Taobao and shipped them via Sea consolidation and I'm pretty sure they didn't cost SG$50! I don't think they're ever close to that amount!

Anyway, now to our next example:

These cute Sundae correction tapes cost SG$1.54 each on Shopee. Shipping fee is $1. So it'll be SG$6.16 for 4, and $7.16 after including shipping fee.

They cost SG$3.35 for 4 on Taobao.

The items weights 0.333kg, which will be converted to about SG$4.50 via Sea consolidation shipping.

You might be wondering why something so light can cost so much?

That is because for small items <1kg, the shipping fee is at a flat rate of RMB21 (~SG$4.50). However, if the weight (or total weight if you consolidate many items) is 1-10 kg, the rate is RMB11/kg (SG$2.50/kg) and RMB9/kg (SG$1.90/kg) for 11-30kg.

So yes, Sea shipping is not the best option for shipping small items. For this item, if you go via Direct Air, it'll cost SG$3.80. (estimated) So that makes the price of these correction tape is about the same on both sites.

So after 2 example, we get no conclusion. It's just not a clear A vs B comparison. I mean, it depends a lot on the shipping options. But in most cases, Taobao have a slightly cheaper price (if you buy many items and use consolidate shipment).

Side: I noticed a "trend" on Shopee. That is some sellers would purposefully delay shipment and the system would cancel the order due to "inactivity" of delivery status. I've faced it a few times over the past few months. And I did contacted one of the seller and she said she have to cancel the order because after all the vouchers and coins (discounts), she is selling at a lost.

Well, I've tried to sell on Shopee too, I know that Shopee makes the seller bear all the discounts from coins, vouchers, sales and also the shipment fees. So I predict it'll be soon that prices on Shopee will go up.

Shipping/Delivery Time

I think it's no secret that most of the cheaper options on Shopee actually comes from overseas (China). For the same product, the one selling on a local store would usually cost more than one that is from China. Not to mention that those that ship locally usually have a higher shipping fee (it's complicated but let's just say courier and postage in Singapore is expensive).

So, you might be thinking that there is no much different when it comes to shipping time?

Well, yes and no.

Because shipping methods plays a huge part.

Shopee Shipping Time

Shopee shipment time is usually faster than most of the shipping methods on Taobao. Shopee averages about 8-10 days on shipment time. But this depends on the Shipping methods too. Did you opted for the free Standard Economy or paid the SG$1 for the Standard Express? Or did you pay more for other shipping options?

Let's take a look at the delivery process:

Most of my shopping on Shopee left China 4 days (5 days max) after I paid for the order. Meaning the 2 red colour parts took only 4 days. (Talk about China have very demanding requirements for their courier drivers).

So what makes the differences is in the blue > yellow colour parts - local courier.

For most local courier (exception of SingPost), they usually takes up to 3 days max to deliver. SingPost can take up to 5 days. It's because of the shorter working hours of SingPost compared to the other courier services.

And from my personal experiences, there is no noticeable difference in speed of delivery between Standard Economy (free) and Standard Express (cost SG$1), which both is handled by SingPost. (They used to engage 3rd party courier services but I'm not sure now).

Taobao Shipping Time

Well, once again, it depends on the shipping methods. For most Tabobao Direct shipment, they'll go through the same thing as Shopee shipment (see above diagram).

As for Consolidation shipment, there'll be one more step between the 2 red colour parts (seller and port), which is the forwarder warehouse. You've wait for all your shopping items to reached the warehouse, consolidate them and then pay the shipment fee. (Don't be surprised at the price, coz I usually do! LOL)

Anyway, the average shipment for Taobao Sea consolidation (after paying for shipment) will be 3.5 weeks, 2 weeks for Air consolidation (after paying for shipment), 8-10 days for Air Direct and 10-12 days for Sea Direct.

Customer Service/Buyer Protection

Customer Service

I'll have to say they're both very polite but not very helpful in most cases. They'll much rather you liaise with the vendor (seller) yourself. (And hell, you might face some really rude sellers!) It's unless things can't be settled that they'll step in.

However, I do feel that the Customer Service (CS) from Taobao seems to have more knowledge about the system and is more willing to go the extra mile. I remember there was once that I faced some problems (I can't remember the details now since it's years ago) and need to contact the warehouse.

When I told them that I'm overseas and that international calls is expensive, the CS actually made the call for me and settled the problem!

For the Shopee CS... well, you're better off reading the FAQ. I mean they just seems to copy and paste a set of fixed answers. With of course a few rare exceptions who take time to understand the situation.

I remembered a recent incident, whereby I almost vomited blood when contacting their CS. I mean she just kept repeating the copy-and-paste "solution" which obviously doesn't apply in my case and doesn't answer any of my queries. At the end of it, she played the "delay game" - asking me to wait for the item to arrive before contacting Shopee again. Well done.

Buyer Protection

Hmm... To be honest, I'm not very clear about Taobao's buyer protection since most of them aren't applicable to me - Like their 7 days return, local shipping insurance (you've to pay for it). If I didn't understand wrongly, it's an insurance that you'll get compensation if you need to return the item perhaps due to damage or other reasons. (It's only for the courier within China) Anyway, I never paid for it, so not very sure how it really work.

From what I checked, Taobao promises a refund of up to RMB2000 + International Shipping fee for damaged item and will refund for missing parcels too.

I've personally received a full refund of my shopping (excluding shipment fees) when my parcel was believed to be missing. What happened was, it was not delivered 2 weeks after arriving in Singapore. Contacted Taobao delivery CS and he confirmed it went missing, guided me through the refund procedure and I got my refund shortly. (I forgot the details already... but the parcel did arrive, about a week after I got my refund... oops!)

When requesting for a refund, the key is to NEVER click the "Confirmed Received Item" (确认收货). Because once click, payment will be released to the seller and you'll probably never get your refund back. The same goes for Shopee, NEVER click the "Order Received"!

For most cases with wrong or damaged item received, liaising with the seller would solve the problem, as most of them won't mind refunding you in exchange for a better review. However, some would refuse to refund if you don't promise a shining good review or if you can't return the item.

Worst case scenario would be, asking Taobao CS to get involved. Show them the prove (photos and sometimes video) and you'll get your refund. But there are time whereby Taobao request you return the item and that's when you can't do anything about it unless you're willing to pay the shipment fee (which can be more than the item itself).

Shopee buyer protection work almost in the same way as Taobao. You can request a refund if you do not receive your item after the promised estimated delivery date and you'll usually get it. For other reasons (damaged/missing/wrong items), you liaise with the seller first and if it doesn't work, Shopee get involved.

For Shopee, I find that you've a slightly higher chance of getting refund without having to return the item to oversea sellers. (But it'll be a long process - disputing with seller, submitting video and photos evidence, it can be a few back and fore)

If you want more protection, buy from Shopee Mall, they offer 15 days return, whereby they will not only refund you the full price but will also cover the return shipping fee.

Discounts, Promotions and Reward program

Hmm... I guess this is the part which makes a huge difference when choosing which site to shop on! I mean this is one of the biggest factor which got me into choosing Shopee over Taobao.

Taobao

Firstly, since Taobao is a China platform, it serves their local community better. Plus, there is the language barrier and there are some features that requires ID verifications, which I didn't want to.

I must admit that due to language barrier I still couldn't fully understand all their features and games. I just know they can earn coins, ang baos and discounts vouchers.

But I don't get why I couldn't use more coins (I've over 10K of them) to offset my shopping. There is options to exchange coins for coupons/vouchers. But these vouchers have a lot of limitations (only selected items and stores only, which are still more expensive after discounts) and some are discount vouchers for their local couriers, place of interest tickets, train tickets...etc. These are not useful for non-local like me.

Apart from their annual huge Double 11 and 12 sales (which have gotten less attractive over the years), I usually don't visit Taobao as much unless I'm not able to find something on Shopee or that Shopee's price is way too expensive.

To me (and I reckon for all overseas non-ID verified users), Taobao have zero reward system. Or is too complicated to understand.

Shopee

On the other hand, Shopee have lots of sales catered for locals (National Day sales, Children's Day sales, Hari Raya sales, GSS, Bubble Tea sales...etc) on top of the annual Doubles Sales (Double 9, Double 10, Double 11...etc). I can't count how many times I bought Liho and Four Seasons vouchers during sales.

Not to mention the various ways to earn coins - daily login, playing games and Shopee farm. Well, they're obviously ways to get users to visit their sites daily. But it can be a win-win situation if you can resist the temptation to buy things!

You also get daily cashback vouchers whereby you can use them to get cashback in the form of coins. Coins can be use to offset shopping - 100 coins = SG$1. A maximum of 1000 coins can be use per day. (I wish I can use as much coins to offset my Taobao shopping! I've so much Taobao coins!)

There is also Birthday discount vouchers, tier rewards and refer a friend program which I won't go into. You can find out about them here and here.

I'm pretty cheapskate, I'm love the vouchers, discounts, sales and free coins! So Shopee is my obvious choice.

Well, at the end of the day, it all depends on your needs and preferences. There are pros and cons for both sites and the things to consider would be:

- Shipment - Are you in a hurry to get the items? How heavy is your items?

- Is Reward/loyal system important to you?

- Price - How much price differences makes the deal?

- Language Barrier (I assume you know some Chinese since you're shopping on Taobao)

- Convenience - paying only once or paying twice?

I personally go to Shopee first since I've got the coins and vouchers and I'm quite a lazy shopper, so I just want to pay and leave the rest to Shopee. If I'm in the right mood, I'll browse on both sites. But it's quite impossible to compare the price then since you won't know the exact weight.

A trick I try to estimate the weight of the item is to proceed to checkout the item and when asked to select shipping options, look at the Direct Air option, there'll be an estimated shipping fee. (You can proceed to divide it by it's price/kg to have a rough gauge of the weight. It usually work but its a lot of work.

So yeah, I've only done that twice. Both time, they're lighter than the estimation.

I've actually did a comparison for a particular shopping haul the estimated shipping fee for Direct Air is RMB84.50 but in the end, I went with  Air Consolidation shipping and only paid RMB33.

However, note that there'll be rare cases whereby the estimated weight is much lesser than the actual weight and you'll have to pay for the differences.

Well, I must say my experience on both sites have been pleasant so far. There have been small hiccups but no huge problems. Which site do you prefer?

DIY cake pan, cake box and paper bags!

Just recently, my sister got into no-bake cheesecake and a few of her friends requested to try her cake. (I'll say they're really bold because my sis is just a beginner with almost zero experiences!)

And like expected, there was chores! First, our freezer is so stuffed it couldn't fit the 10" cake pan she bought! And we can't just take all those frozen poultry and seafood out! (Yes, our fridge is very packed as we gotten one that is too small for our family size)

So in the end, she have to make the cake in our ice tray instead and we have to lay a layer of plastic wrap so that taking out will be easier. The other process are quite ok, but right at the end, she have swimming strawberries because she had set them in too late and they're not held strong enough by the cheese layer.

Anyway, she did made a first batch -

Our ice tray is a square of about 21-23cm and we only managed to cut out 2 of these. I think it's only about slight more than half out the whole. The rest are just ... well ... not so pleasing to the eyes.

Well, our brilliant plastic wrap idea didn't work that well and we've very very ugly edges and quite a lot of cream and jelly stuck to the wrap!

(We did a batch with baking paper too, it turned out a little better but still the sides aren't that attractive.)

But you know, at least we did have 2 of these presentable ones to give away. BUT, how do we package it?

My sister did get some boxes for cakes but it couldn't fit these special-sized cakes. The breath is ok, but the height won't fit. We thought hard about whether to cut a strawberry away but that would make the box look too empty! Like an S size trying to fit in an L size!

In the end, we trimmed the sides very very carefully (almost touching one of the strawberries) and got it to finally fit in the box.

After seeing my sister struggle so hard to find just a suitable packaging for her cake, I decided that maybe we should make something so that it would fit our needs/

Firstly, I DIY a cake pan with cardboard and wrap it up with a layers of plastic. Not very pretty, I know. I just hope it works.

To be honest, I was very nervous, I was very afraid that it would not work and all the ingredients and time would be wasted!

Well, it held its ground! Phew!!

Now, to the next one, the box.

I choose to go with the version with window as I just love the window idea... LOL. I used 3 pieces of A4 size kraft paper of 350gsm to make these boxes.

However, I did made a mistake in the template; I missed out the back of the box! And I only discovered that after I have glued the "frame" of the box. So now I can only work with the "drawer" part of the box and blue the back into it. It makes the drawer a little tight and harder to pull out. But at least it won't get stuck!

So with the box done, why not make a paper bag for it too?

Actually I do have paper bags of various size and shapes at home. I kinda "panic-buy" from Taobao previously. I remember it was Chinese New Year and we didn't have enough right-size bags for the gifts. So we ended up rushing out to get some, and we nearly not get any and ended up having to buy at a higher price than usual.

Anyway, back to topic, since we've very "special-sized" everything. We still need a special sized bag. None of the paper bags we've fits the box "presentably enough". How so?

Well, it'll be ugly if you've lots of empty spaces in your bag. It looks "stringy". And most of the bags we have are too tall or wide. And a shopping trip didn't solve the bag problem.

So yeah... have to DIY again...

I made 3 bags as I did 3 boxes too.

This is actually a trial piece so it's made just with plain drawing block (I estimated 110 or 120gsm). It turned out quite well so we decided to use it. My sis thinks its too plain so I printed some sticks and pasted them on.

Next, I discovered some coloured A3 construction papers that was "idling" in my store. So I decided to just use them to make another one. But this one is slightly thinner (I reckon it's about 70-80gsm).

So I added a thick 300gsm paper at it's base. (And later on, pasted semi-glossy sticker paper on the inside to make it slightly waterproof)

It also fell on the plain side, so I drew some strawberries and pasted them at the corner!

For the last one, I pasted the thin construction paper on the drawing block and it's just the right thickness!

This is how the bottom looks!

Yeay! All done and packed!!

This is a fun yet tiring project. It started with a problem and then met with more problems. I've actually made at least 2 templates for the paper bags and done quite a few mockups.

I started with thick 300gsm paper but the cracking at the fold lines are really bad. So I've to abandon the idea. In the end, the 100ish gsm paper does the work and they've much neater fold lines!
